Julian Lewis
Chief Executive Officer & Founder
Julian Lewis is an innovative educational leader, entrepreneur, and founder of UPLIFT Collegiate Schools, whose mission is to transform the educational experience by creating schools where students, educators, and families thrive together. A proud graduate of Prairie View A&M University, Lewis earned his Bachelor of Science in Architecture in 2008. While he initially envisioned a career designing buildings, a visit to his former high school and conversations with former teachers changed the course of his life. Witnessing the evolving challenges facing education, he realized that while architecture could shape structures, education had the power to shape lives. That realization inspired him to pursue a calling centered on serving children, strengthening communities, and transforming the future through education. Committed to lifelong learning, Lewis is currently completing his Master's degree in Educational Leadership at Prairie View A&M University, further strengthening his expertise in organizational leadership, school improvement, and educational innovation. In 2013, Lewis earned his Alternative Teaching Certification as a Generalist (Grades 4–8) and began what would become a distinguished career serving students and families throughout the Houston area. Over the next 13 years, he taught Science and Social Studies in both charter school networks and traditional public school systems, including service at a Discipline Alternative Education Program (DAEP), where he worked with students facing significant academic and behavioral challenges. Throughout his career, Lewis became known as an educator who refused to accept traditional limitations. His classrooms consistently reflected creativity, innovation, and student engagement. Long before many educational technologies became commonplace, he implemented digital systems that allowed students to submit classroom questions, restroom requests, and other needs without interrupting instruction, creating a more efficient and respectful learning environment. He also introduced collaborative gaming stations that served as purposeful brain breaks, teaching teamwork, communication, leadership, and character development while reinforcing classroom culture. As his experience grew, Lewis recognized that meaningful school transformation required more than instructional innovation. Working across multiple schools and districts exposed recurring challenges affecting both students and educators, including teacher burnout, limited family engagement, inadequate mentorship opportunities, inconsistent social-emotional support, and workplace cultures that often overlooked staff well-being. Rather than accepting these challenges as the norm, he envisioned a new model of education—one that would place equal emphasis on academic excellence, educator wellness, student development, and strong family partnerships. That vision became UPLIFT Collegiate Schools. At the heart of UPLIFT is Lewis's philosophy of Work. Life. Play. Joy. Balance. He believes exceptional schools are built when educators have the time, energy, and support to be exceptional. This philosophy led to the development of innovative operational practices, including a 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. instructional workday, allowing educators the opportunity to spend meaningful mornings with their own families while providing additional flexibility before the school day begins. The model also supports students who benefit from later start times, helping improve attendance, engagement, and overall wellness. UPLIFT further reimagines the educator experience by providing two planning periods, reducing unnecessary work outside of contract hours, and creating intentional opportunities for collaboration, mentorship, professional growth, and celebration. Lewis believes that when educators experience joy in their profession, students ultimately receive a better educational experience. His vision extends beyond operations. Lewis believes every child deserves to see themselves as a future college student or career professional. To cultivate that mindset, UPLIFT embraces a collegiate culture throughout the organization. Educators are addressed as Professors, dedicated office spaces and office hours mirror the college experience, and students are immersed in an environment that inspires higher education from an early age. The district also offers opportunities such as HBCU-style marching band, majorette, color guard, and step programs, exposing students to rich traditions of excellence, leadership, discipline, and cultural pride. For Lewis, the inspiration behind UPLIFT is deeply personal. He has been married to his wife, Erica Lewis, for four years, and together they celebrate their son, Edward Randle Jr., who proudly graduated this year. Becoming a husband and father reinforced what he had witnessed throughout his years in education—that every family wants their child to be known, supported, challenged, and prepared for a successful future. Lewis founded UPLIFT with a legacy in mind. His dream was not only to create a school where his future grandchildren could experience what a premier education should look like—one that educates the whole child while embracing and supporting the entire family—but also to ensure that the children of his former students, and generations to come, would have access to that same transformative experience. That is why UPLIFT was intentionally designed with every child and every family in mind. The district's commitment is rooted in the belief that education is strongest when schools and families work together as partners. Every decision, every program, and every innovation reflects two guiding principles: Student Driven. Family Focused. Today, Julian Lewis continues to lead with a bold vision of redefining what education can be. Through UPLIFT Collegiate Schools, he is building more than a school district—he is building a legacy. A legacy where students are prepared for college, career, and life; educators rediscover the joy of teaching; families are valued as essential partners; and every child is empowered to reach their fullest potential.
